Carbon neutral
BioFirst group plans to be carbon neutral for her own activities by 2026
Over the last few years our emissions per turnover have decreased by over 50% for our own activities (scope 1 & 2). This has been achieved by several actions.
Firstly, we have invested in new and more efficient facilities.
Secondly, we are continuously investing in the generation of our own renewable energy. Our share of renewable energy is rapidly increasing.
And finally, we acquired several new subsidiaries that already had relatively low emissions, compared to their revenue.
As a group we are measuring our emissions compared to the total turnover, as we are rapidly growing. So, while our first steps are significant, not all reductions are due to practical measures and there is still quite some work to do to become carbon neutral.
We aim to be carbon neutral for our own activities by the end of 2026. So what does that mean for BioFirst Group?
We will continue to invest in cleaner and more efficient machinery and climate facilities and realise a reduction in our emissions. In our strategy we focus on the most relevant sources of emissions.
Secondly, we plan to invest in the use of renewable energy sources. Traditionally, almost 60% of our emissions were caused by the use of electricity in production. We would prefer to generate all the renewable energy we need ourselves. On smaller sites, or where this generation is not possible, we may be required to invest through third parties. In these situations, we will substitute the use of fossil fuel for heating to more sustainable alternatives.
And only when the bulk of our emissions (65 – 90%) is reduced, we plan to compensate for our remaining emissions by carbon offsetting. We are currently pushing the limits of our investments to be able to deliver a product with the lowest possible environmental footprint, at market competitive pricing.
In our scope 3, the most significant impact is by the use of our product & this is a very positive impact compared to traditional methods. One we aim to increase of course. To reduce our largest other scope 3 impacts, we are currently working on a strategy to reduce the amount and type of materials we use in production and to reduce the impact of logistics in our supply chain.
